Basic Rules of Blackjack
Casino Blackjack (also called 21) is the most popular table game in casinos worldwide. It is a comparing card game where each player competes only against the dealer. With perfect play, it offers one of the lowest house edges of any casino game (often around 0.5% or less on good rules).
Blackjack Objective
- Get a hand total closer to 21 than the dealer’s hand without going over 21 (busting).
- If you bust, you lose automatically.
- If the dealer busts, all players who didn’t bust win.
- A Blackjack (Ace + 10-value card on the first two cards) is an automatic win that pays a bonus.
Blackjack Card Values
- Number cards (2–10) = face value
- Face cards (Jack, Queen, King) = 10
- Ace = 1 or 11 (whichever is better for the hand)
A hand is “soft” if it contains an Ace counted as 11 (e.g., Ace + 6 = soft 17). It is “hard” if the Ace must be counted as 1 or there is no Ace.
How a Blackjack Hand Is Played (Standard American Rules)
- Players place their main bet in the betting circle.
- Dealer deals two cards to each player (face up) and two cards to themselves: one face up (upcard) and one face down (hole card).
- Players act in turn, starting from the seat to the dealer’s left (“first base”).
- After all players finish, the dealer reveals the hole card and plays according to fixed rules.
- Hands are compared and paid.
Player Options (in order of typical use):
- Stand — Keep your current total.
- Hit — Take one more card (can hit multiple times).
- Double Down — Double your bet and receive exactly one more card, then stand. Best on strong starting hands (e.g., 10 or 11 total).
- Split — If you have a pair, split into two separate hands. You must place an equal bet on the second hand. You can usually re-split up to 3–4 times (rules vary). Aces are often split only once.
- Surrender (when offered) — Give up your hand and lose only half your bet. “Early surrender” (before dealer checks for Blackjack) is better than “late surrender.”
